what is this?

It was on our mailbox, and I've never seen such a creature before. Any insect-ologists with the answer?

It is blazing hot outside. Again. They promised us rain and a cold front today. I'm waiting for it.

Waiting waiting waiting....

Is there anything romantic about summer on the prairie? I'm sure there is and I'm not dissing any prairie-lovers, but my BC blood finds it hard to function in this weather.

I know it's ungodly hot. I'm even pining away for the badlands of North Dakota. I'm desperate.

But, I think the fireflies are romantic. And the air-conditioned theater on cheap movie night.

Are there fireflies in BC? This is the first summer I have ever seen them.

first post on your blog I think. The insect you've discovered is a mayfly.

I'll shamelessly quote wikipedia:

"Mayflies are insects which belong to the Order Ephemeroptera (from the Greek ephemeros = "short-lived", pteron = "wing", referring to the short life span of adults). They have been placed into an ancient group of insects termed the Paleoptera, which also contains the dragonflies and damselflies. They are aquatic insects whose immature stage (called naiad or, colloquially, nymph) usually lasts one year in fresh water. The adults are short-lived, from a few hours to a few days depending on the species."
