happy women's day!

Today is International Women's Day! I remembered this important holiday after receiving two lovely e-mails from guys with whom I studied in Russia, several years ago. For some reason, North America doesn't recognize the holiday, but if we were in other countries (for example, Russia) this day would be a big deal! There would be no school and no one would go to work. All the men and boys would buy flowers, chocolates and presents for the girls and women in their lives. And they would be nice to them all day. I have no flowers or chocolates to offer, but I have been deeply appreciating all the fine women in my life today. You should too.

In other news, it is Spring Break and although it's felt a bit spring-y, it hasn't felt very break-y. I seem to have a cloud that trails behind me everywhere these days. It says, "You shouldn't be reading that book for fun--you should be working. You shouldn't be sitting on the couch--you should be grading those papers. You shouldn't be writing a poem--you should be annotating that chapter. You shouldn't be sleeping--you should be working on that paper." In other words, the cloud is full of feelings of guilt and pressure and anxiety. Will it ever end, or is this life?

The best line of the semester that came from Josh's session of student teaching at the middle school? One of the students on the last day came up to Josh and got really close to his face and after he told Josh he would miss him, the student said, "Just between us, Mr. Barry is a lot uglier than you are!" (Mr. Barry is the cooperating teacher) I found that quite humourous. It beats getting called "darling" by one of your students (yes, that happened to me last week).

Happy International Women's Day to you! (And gah! I always forget that spring break is just only long enough to make overly grandiose plans and then find oneself Overly Oppressed by Should. I keep getting exhausted by should-ing myself and then I fall asleep and feel guilty. Gah! Hope you give yourself a little respite from the shoulds.)

Right now I should:
-plan for next week
-mark the pile of things that seems to stay the same size or grow larger even as I try to make it smaller
-send out resumes (although I may wait until next week because I'm supposed to know about this job by then)
-clean my desk
-pretend that I'm working since I am at work, after all. (but hey, it's Friday afternoon.)

But I'm not. It's break time. You should take one, too.

Love you, dah!
