Vote No on Amendment E

I find it very funny--all these commercials about the elections tomorrow. In the "Vote No for Amendment E" commercial, there's a very creepy, stereotypical inmate who intimdates jurors (who are actually supposed to be on a parole board...) by giving them the evil eye while they're trying to decide whether to grant him parole or not. "Don't give criminals that power" the commerical says in a very raspy voice. The funny part is that inmates are working on the building that I teach in. Every day I pass them in their orange jumpsuits while they scale the walls of the building, fixing things. I keep waiting for one of them to say, "That's a fact, Sssssarah." I had to reassure one of my students one day: "I'm sure none of them are actually murderers or anything." She was scared to walk past the prisoners on the way to class. Silly girl?

Silly girl. Those inmates are well-supervised, I'm sure.
And I doubt that they'd let really dangerous offenders leave the prison.

funny. today is vote day for Ballot Measure 2. the oil companies were granted a lease to build a gas pipeline, 20 years ago, and it still hasn't happened. so Ballot Measure 2 is a huge yearly tax (4 days of their profit) that would hopefully make them reconsider. even the christian radio stations are full of "vote yes on no. 2" or "just say no". i wish i could vote.

I shook the hand of a middle-age Native American inmate once when I was on a school trip to a prison. He happened to walk out a door while I was filing by at the same time. My young eyes met his hollow ones, and sticking out his hand he said in a deep voice, "How'd ya like to shake the hand of an inmate?" I didn't say anything, but I shook. His hand was tough and weathered. I remember being afraid (this was about 15 years ago) but satisfied with the encounter. I wondered if part of his soul jumped into mine.

Now, of course, I've shaken quite a few hands of inmates on trips to the penitentiary to play classical guitar in my quartet.

The point is shaking hands with inmates is OK, and I typecast a Native American to build mystique and suspense (but it did happen that way).
